A small town girl making the big city home. She loves everything DC, and is slowly introducing her one-year-old to the world of Smithsonians, monuments, cherry blossoms and the DMV. A perfect day in town would include breakfast at Eastern Market (or Founding Farmers), checking out the National Gallery of Art, a burger and/or shake at Good Stuff or sandwich from Taylor Made, the two mile walk around the monuments, and cupcakes from Sprinkles (or Georgetown Cupcake if the line isn't forever long) to go.

Grandma’s Fudge

Every year there are several things I look forward to around the holidays.

Yep, Grandma’s fudge makes my list of all things festive.

Living across the country  from family, the holidays can be an especially lonely time of year. I mean, just thinking about missing the family gatherings and opening gifts on Christmas morning is enough to send me out for some retail therapy.

Making this fudge can save any cold and cranky December day for me.

I can’t help but smile when I think about how my grandmother sent it to a cousin living overseas, or how there were always two double batches at our annual parties– just to satisfy the nutty people.

Taking one bite takes me back to opening gifts in her home with aunts, uncles, cousins and siblings– around her vintage white Christmas tree no less.

So many wonderful memories in one bite.

In a few weeks my grandmother will gather her family around the tree and give them something she’s been working on for a few years now (with my help, which is why it’s probably taken a few years instead of a few months). A cookbook filled with family favorites– including this fudge.

So save the diet for January, and make this fudge. I promise you won’t regret it– Any recipe from a sweet grandmother that ends with “I LOVE FUDGE” on the card is not allowed be terrible.

Grandma’s Fudge Recipe

  • 4 C. Sugar
  • 1 large can Evaporated Milk
  • 1 C. Butter
  • 2 bags of Milk Chocolate Chips
  1. In a saucepan, bring the sugar and evaporated milk to a boil. Boil for 13 minutes EVEN
  2. Add the butter and chocolate chips. Stir to combine.
  3. Using a blender, whip the mixture until smooth and the butter is well blended.
  4. Pour into a buttered 9×13 pan and let cool.
  5. It’s also good with small marshmallows or nuts added into the blender at the very end.

A tip from my grandmother: Get a small cup of boiling water and a pastry brush and while sugar and milk are cooking, dip brush in water and wipe the sugar crystals off the sides of the saucepan. This small amount of water will not hurt the candy. Do it 2-3 times. This prevents the candy from going sugary.

    Thanks for the recipe! Family recipe books are the best! Yes, they take work, but are so worth it. ps If you need an extra “cousin” to pitch in on the printing costs, I’d be happy to make a donation (and be adopted) for a copy. No pressure to share if its a family secret. 🙂
